animated favicons?

I'd seen simple animated favicons before; they were just a scrolling favicon created by one of those favicon maker sites. Here's a page with a little more detail on making animated favicons along with some example links:

Re: animated favicons?

That's interesting. I had never even thought of having an animated favicon.

I had a favicon before...but, it went away after one of the last upgrade and I just haven't put it back yet.

Re: animated favicons?

Have you ever made an animated gif Arny? It isn't difficult, but I don't know how much you could do with a 16x16 canvas.

Re: animated favicons?

How big is the favicon file, tech555? Did you just make an animated gif and rename it ico?

Re: animated favicons?

I didn't see the animation on veenus' site, but I'm using IE right now so I guess you can only see it in Firefox.

That's interesting though....I could have my little favicon with the letters W D B to spell out our letters. Interesting.

I've never done one Michelle. Do you have instructions on how to?

Re: animated favicons?

Installation 1 : Installing "favicon.ico"

Step 1 : Make ur own favicon.ico, you need to have a software to convert your .jpg, .jpeg or .gif image to .ico. If u dont have, use this link FavIcon from Pics -- how to create a favicon.ico for your website.

Step 2 : After making your own "favicon.ico" upload it to the root directory of your forum. It must show your own favicon icon in your site's title.

Step 3 : If it doesnot appear, Paste this line into your header OR headinclude-template

HTML Code:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" />
And your are done with it...

Installation 2 : Installing "favicon.gif"

Step 1 : Make ur own favicon.gif using this link FavIcon from Pics -- how to create a favicon.ico for your website.

Step 2 : After making your own "favicon.gif" upload it on your server ( Any path u want ).

Step 3 : Edit templete header OR headinclude-template :

Paste on top :

HTML Code:
<link rel="icon" href="http://your-site's-path/favicon.gif" type="image/gif" >
I got this from another site, the poster was banned so i dont feel so bad posting the info here i think if you do it this way i will work in IE....i think.

Re: animated favicons?

Arny, do you have ImageReady with PhotoShop? (Sorry, it's been so long since I did a fresh installation of Photoshop that I don't remember if it comes with ImageReady or not.) Basically you make your image with each frame on a different layer, then use ImageReady to animate them. Here's a tutorial:
How To Create an Animated Gif Using Photoshop | eHow.com
There are also other programs that make animated gifs... I use Paint Shop Pro and GIF Construction Set.

Thanks for the info Michelle!

I'm going to try it out sometime. Right now I'm in the middle of taking care of several other little items on the site. I'm also trying to get this mp3 player working for everyone at WDB.

Re: animated favicons?

Chase, that's cool!

What a pal! Can I ask you for a favor though...the font makes it a little tough to read the letters. Mainly the "D".....can you make those a different font (were you trying to emulate the Disney font?) so that it's a little easier to read?

Re: animated favicons?

Did you guys insert the code for animated favicons. The instructions should be inside the zip. Oh well, I know nobody reads them..

Here is a site which uses an animated favicon

Ivory-bill Researchers Forum

upload the animated favicon to root
and insert the code on after <head>

Code:
<link rel="icon" href="animated_favicon.gif" type="image/gif" >
Val.

Re: animated favicons?

I thought Caddy meant the site generating the favicon didn't work for him, and I'd had the same experience at first. As for the favicon not working, I had that experience also, but it turned out it just wasn't in my browser cache yet. Took some time, but it finally appeared.
