Bad language

I've decided I don't want foul language to be part of my forum. My problem is, how do I define foul language? I need to have some clear cut way so that my mods know what to enforce, and what not.

Some words are obvious, but some are uncertain. Anyone have any ideas on how I can clarify this?

Re: Bad language

you can use the censor list for any words that are absolute no-nos

for iffy words make a thread in the staff section and list them out or talk to the staff about what your feelings are, clearly.

I thought about it, but one of our rival forums recently took some flack, as part of a gentleman's name was censored, as it had a curse in it. It was something like Yoshitiko.

I just worry about getting called out for not handling similar problems the same way. Heck, i've even had mods bickering over if a word should be censored or not.

I wish there were more of a clear line, but it just doesn't seem possible.

Re: Bad language

A troll on my forum once tried to test the limits, saying he couldn't help swearing once he got worked up, and then claimed if we didn't want people using that word, we should just use the censor function. My members (all very well behaved) replied that the forum didn't need the censor turned on as each member had their own censor: the delete key. It was his responsibility to use it.

On that forum I allow stuff that's either cleverly cloaked in euphemism or would go way over a kid's head, so it's not like we censor every reference to something dirty.. But the culture of the forum is such that everyone prefers it clean; they see it as an escape from the vulgarity of the world. You may have to alienate a few members to achieve the culture you want.

Re: Bad language

If you look at your censor option, you can choose to censor curse words and not words that make curses (if that maks sense)

you can censor shit

that would make the name yoki####o

you can censor {shit}

that would make the name yokishito but if the word is typed out shit it would make it ####

i dont censor anything on my sites really, even the n word. every word can be used if in appropriate context. like if we are discussing JJ using the n-word, we can use the n-word in its real form, as demonstration, not to offend. if someone is offended then that's their bad...

Re: Bad language

I wasn't aware of that, but I still don't think I want to use the censoring option. I guess we'll just have to take it on a case by case basis... and try really hard to be consistent.

I censor at my site mainly due to the young eyes that hang out with the parents logged into the site.

Re: Bad language

Same here Arny... there are several young members of my site, along with their parents. I rarely have to censor or delete anything though, the members are really good about behaving themselves.
