Censorship

Censorship

What is censorship? from wikipedia

Quote:
Censorship is the suppression of speech or deletion of communicative material which may be considered objectionable, harmful or sensitive, as determined by a censor. The rationale for censorship is different for various types of data censored:

moral

military

religious

political

corporate
Free speech, our right as americans. Free speech isn't all encompassing though, you own your forum, it is a private website, you can do as you please. You can let people go wild, you can err on the side of caution, or you can rule with a iron fist.

nice writeup on my site about freedom of speech and censorship CLICK

What is acceptable on your site? are there any taboo topics not to be discussed? any rock solid rules that are enforced when opinion are heated?

Re: Censorship

Well my site is different and I have a 100% no censorship rule. I also have an anything goes forum. If things get way too out of line we stick things there. That way it is not indexed by engines. You must be a member to see what goes on in there. Seems to be working so far

I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum to Blake

We censor ourselves because we're all online for the love of Disney and even though we get upset with some decisions made about the parks or other things, we still will chat about it like adults. Without letting emotion get the better of us. We express our disappointments and look for other things to praise.

We're actually a pretty positive bunch.

Re: Censorship

I have swear words censored out on my forum for obvious reasons but that's all.

Re: Censorship

I don't have the swear words filter enabled, even though I get a lot of kids on my site, because a filter isn't going to catch everything. You can write something completely inappropriate without ever once using one of the "seven dirty words". My members know to keep things clean (although I might ignore something that would go straight over a kid's head)

Re: Censorship

Just had a member post something where they were complaining about censorship on another site. My response was as follows ...

Quote:
If the News Journal chooses to censor their forum so what, it's their site, their business both literally and figuratively, they can do what they want. They're under no obligation to allow you (generally speaking) to post on their forum, and the same can be said for this or any website.

It's not as if it's a Free Speech issue, and even if it were you might have the right to say whatever you want but you're not guaranteed an audience ...

Re: Censorship

A wise man once said "If you forum was a brick and mortar business, would you let a customer come in and insult you and all your other customers?"

answer is.....no.
