Do your members discuss politics?

It's raucous caucus time here in the U.S., and the mudslinging is well underway from both sides. It's hard to discuss politics without getting into a fight and ruining the atmosphere. Are your members discussing politics? Do you try to put a damper on the discussions or are you encouraging them?

We discuss politics on ours and we haven't really had any big blowups. Everyone debates but no ones gotten even close to out of control.

I like them as it makes people who might not post as much get in and maybe throw their opinions out there.

*holds Arny back* it's not worth it man! Be cool!

Seriously, my members are more likely to start with the political jokes, I just hope it wouldn't turn into a serious discussion of the issues.

Re: Do your members discuss politics?

I tried to watch the debate tonight but gave up when they both started talking at the same time, decided to take a break... I really do care about the future of my country but I'd actually rather read about the candidates positions then watch them argue...

Re: Do your members discuss politics?

The political discussion in and of itself isn't the problem, it's some of the people discussing it, and that can be said of every site.

As I see it on TalkDelaware, you have a group that backs Obama and a group that backs McCain, some in both groups are trying to sway the other side (as if) which at this point is pointless, and especially for those that actively participate in those discussions because the decision is already made.

Much of what gets posted is rhetoric, you take it as such and move on but some of the rhetoric is so thick that it needs to be called as such and generally, folks don't like it when you challenge their thought process, especially when it's nothing but rhetoric. At that point it degrades to ad hominem, or worse ...

Soon the election will be over and the gloating will begin, that and the hit pieces on the President-Elect, for a little while at least. Oh and don't rule out the "Can't wait till Bush is out" nonsense too once the election is over no matter who wins, that will end in January when the "Glad he's gone" stuff starts ...
