"Front page", or straight to forums?

I'm trying to decide what's best for one of my forums; have the forums at the root of the site with the other stuff in subdirectories linked in the header, or have a "front page" with little bits about each major section of the site including the latest 10 posts? The forum isn't really active yet, despite my constant posting...

From a "webmaster"'s view I like having a frontpage (more places for content) and brand new users get a overall feel of the site. It also gives you a chance to be different from other forums by having special features on it i.e newsfeeds, pictures, etc.

From a returning user perspective, I usually go straight to the forum index and skip the flare. For example, I've bookmarked the forum for vbsetup, and bypass the homepage altogether.

i decided to start my 2 month old forum as the homepage but i'm regretting it now, im a generalist forum and i'm going to have to stand out from the tons of other similar sites so sometime next month i going to shift to /forum with a homepage. I may look at wordpress or a html designed homepage, i've decided against cms page like vbadvanced
