Growing into your forum

Many new forum admins make the mistake of setting up their site and adding each and every possible section they will ever need right off the bat. This creates 2 problems.

1. too many sections to choose from when a new member wants to make a new thread
2. many empty sections as you can only makes so many threads a day

What i suggest is to start your forum off, brand new, with a few well thought out general sections. as those sections grow and you have enough content to spread, pick a popular topic, make a new forum, and move all the threads on that topic out of the general section and into the new forum.

example:
you have a new general forum and have lots of people talking about cars

DO NOT make a new forum for cars, a new forum for trucks, a new forum for suvs, a new forum for hybrids, a new forum for imports, etc etc

DO make 1 forum for all car talk, let it grow, then once you have say 15 or 20 various threads about trucks, add a truck SUB forum. if trucks continue to grow make it it's own forum if its that big. same with other types of vehicles..

just a little advice from the Caddyman

Re: Growing into your forum

good advice mate, I remember my first forum a few years ago and it had tons of section and it just didn't work. Thankfully with experience I learned to do it your way this time round and it works very well.

Re: Growing into your forum

good deal, it is hard sometimes to limit the forums. i just ran into this with a forum i setup for a client, she literally gave me a list of 50+ sections to add. i had to talk her down off the ledge and we settle on 20ish i believe after I explained all this to her.
