how do you go about finding partners?

For those of you who have partnered with someone to start a new forum, how did you go about finding them and hashing out all the details? I'm not talking about appointing other mods or admins to handle the users, but finding someone who you'd trust with the server password and who would get a cut of the profits.

i found my quasi partner on the first forum i staffed, he was the admin, we struck up a friendship and he is kind of like my mentor now. he urged me to start my own sites, if i have a question i ask him, etc.

he lives out in CA.

I dont have any partners at all but that is a good question. I could never find people who are into and dedicated to running forums.

Re: how do you go about finding partners?

It certainly is an interesting question.

I actually started thinking about this yesterday when this question was first posed. But, what if we had a bunch of the heads of the forums come together and do a little "United Forums of America" forum or something!

One of those 'super' forums with multiple topics and each category could be moderated by the expert of their 'field'. For instance, if we have a travel and leisure section, I could watch that area since I have a lot of 'vacation' experience. We could have a political section (argue crazy) and another section about Fashion (petite chic) and sports (talkphillysports). Plus, we can have one forum for 'local issues' with certain states represented New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, etc.

And with the SEO knowledge that Dave and Brandon and some others have...wouldn't that be a huge forum?

I suppose it's easier if you have trustworthy RL friends with the same interests and ability to run a web site, but I don't know anyone who fits all those criteria. and even partnerships formed offline can go sour.

true i would love to have a good friend be into this stuff like me but its kinda mysterious to them, when we hangout we get to like "how are the websites Chase?" "good man, they are doing good" " cool"

that is about it, me and my biz partner guy Steve have been working together goin on like 5 years now i think...

Re: how do you go about finding partners?

Luckily I have a few folks that are in my life that are into sites and lots of them into Disney. So, I can chat about stuff with them all night long. It's good to have someone (and in my case a few folks) to be able to talk to about how the sites are doing.

Since i know how to do most of the things i need to do and i like doing it myself, a partner isn't an option.

plus if you have a real partner in a site together you may have to split the profits and this isn't fun.....

my and the guy i work with have our own sites so we dont have to deal with that.
