Members selling their accounts?

Have you heard about the practice of selling long-established accounts on, say, role-playing games, social netwoorking sites, and even occasionally forums? I probably wouldn't have believed it myself unlesss I'd seen a member of a different forum talk about having been offered some money for his account and the use of his name and persona (plus I've received a few offers for my old ICQ number myself). I don't know how common this is, but has anyone else heard about it going on on any of the forums you visit?

Wow...this is the first time I've heard anything like this.

I personally wouldn't want to post under someone elses alias but I can understand why it happens.

I had a member sign up on my forum with a username that is BIG in my niche. I know the member is European and when this new member signed up with his username and started posting, I knew it wasn't the real deal. Turns out my new member was in his teens and just wanted to be respected. I finally convinced him to use his own username and he is now a well respected member of our community.

I wouldn't think that admins would allow the trade to happen anyway, I wouldn't.

the name wasn't Darkman by any chance?

I have came across such instances several times through the years. A good digg account would be worth buying as long as the account have hundreds of friends connected to it.

I must have a gap in my cultural knowledge here... what's the significance of the name Darkman?

It's the person that my member was trying to be in my post above.

Re: Members selling their accounts?

yeah, I don't think I'd be happy if I ever heard of that going on on my forum. I'd rather they just created their own accounts and took time to build their reputation like everyone else.
