Suggestion: use your calendar!

Some forums truly have no use for it (there just aren't very many significant holidays youu can put on a web desiign forum, for example) but I see many forums that could be utilizing their calendars more effectively. On one forum I've added a bunch of silly holidays from Holidays For Everyday: An excuse to celebrate everyday!, and the members really get into it... they even talk about what they're doing for Talk Like a Pirate Day or National Juggling Day. That wouldn't work on all forums, but there might be something relevant to your forum you can add; how about important days in Disney history, Arny? You want to use the Holiday Manager in your Admin CP for events you want to appear every year.
I also put up notices of the deadlines of major contests that might be of interest to my members... for example, I've got a bunch of ice cream-related contests on the calendar at Ice Cream Forum. Maybe visitors will see it listed in the Upcoming Events section of forumhome and think this must be an interesting forum to join!

Michelle, great point about the Disney History. I started using it for about a week and then stopped. I had birthdays for the Disney Legends and then the opening dates of important or beloved attractions as well.

I gotta get back to using it more. I'll probably have one of my mods pick that up and help us out with that.

I saw (I think it was Polynesian Medic's) post with the Disney history for the day, I personally wouldn't want to do 365 Holiday Manager entries of "This Day in Disney history", but it might work for you. I would definitely put the major stuff like Walt's birthday, etc.

Yup...we have a daily Disney history forum. I can probably have Jeff simply take the birthdays and put them in there after creating those threads.

Re: Suggestion: use your calendar!

oh, I should add the contest, and thanks for the link
When I listen to BOL "buzz out loud, a cnet podcast" they talk about the daily holidays. What a great idea!

I've added the contest

I'll start adding the BOTM ones as well

thanks again, +Rep'd

Just make sure your template displays the callendar entries for the day on your forumhome, I've noticed many designers leave it out. (Perhaps because not many people use it.)

Re: Suggestion: use your calendar!

Often the calendar does get overlooked but I did the same as you. I found bizarre holidays that pertain to my topics and put them up. I also like to use it for scheduled chats and immediate family birthdays.

In the past I've set up an admin only calendar. We schedule tasks that need to be done and other important dates. Its also a good way to put an admin's name in there as a reminder to do those things.

Re: Suggestion: use your calendar!

Just heard about another holiday site in a discussion on Metafilter: BROWNIELOCKS and THE 3 BEARS - Educational, Fun & Colorful For Ages 12 on up!
This one seems to have a lot more of the monthly observances (national * month), not quite as many individual days, but several different ones then the other site has. I found several new ones for my science forum
