Under what circumstances would you read a member's private messages?

when would you deem it ok to snoop in a member's private messages? I've only done so once, when I suspected a new member was sending spam through private messages. (I was right, and had to erase them all.) Do you think your members have a right to private messages or do you think your ownership of the database trumps that?

ownership of course trumps all, but ethics and "can i" are different.

i don't read PM's, if i suspect a spammer i watch WOL...if i see the would-be spammer spamming a member I will pm that member to see what they said, usually though that kind of spam gets reported almost immediately.

I trust my members to let me know if something is wrong. I dont think we should ever have to go that far..I mean if someone is disrupting the flow....Then well you can tell who is by looking at their posts

I have read someones pms before on my forum but only because I was tipped of they were spamming links to other forums in them.

It's a pain in the ring anyway searching through the database for them. I know there's a hack for it but who needs another hack lol.

installing the hack would make the temptation too great for some, I'm sure... plus you never know what other admins might do.

I have to admit I read two of my members pms awhile back only because I was tipped that where going to sabatoge my forum which ended up being bull. Anyways what I read was nothing but cybersex messages hahaha! I never read a pm again and I also uninstalled the program.

Re: Under what circumstances would you read a member's private messages?

I have never and I don't think that I will unless there is something reported to me by my members.

I encourage spamming of Disney-related sites somewhat so that we can share information, so that shouldn't be an issue for my site.

I don't think I've read anyones pm's on this forum, but back in my phpbb2 days I had to check a few.. that forum had items that were traded, and I had to check to make sure items were sent like they should of been once or twice
