I need to learn how to use SSH, and first impressions of it, scare the life out of me lol.
Can anyone make give any "simple" tips, on the basics of its use. For example, database backups, file transfers etc.
Im able to connect to the site, so just need to loose this fear i now have of using the likes of Putty.
( ive looked around at some tutorials, and, well, the words over my head apply at the moment ) Contributor vBulletin Owner | | | Join Date: Jun 2007 | Posts: 2,625 | Location: New York City | | Re: VPS and SSH I love PuTTY and wish my current hosting plan offered ssh what operating system is your vps running? | | | Join Date: Jan 2007 | Posts: 90 | Location: UK | | Re: VPS and SSH Its on CentOS 5 and so far, ive certainly seen an increase in the sites speed.
Ive had a few glitches, but am gradually overcoming them.
Its just command line based commands aren't my flavour of the month, but due to limitations in the likes of phpmyadmin, i need to learn it. Know of any "Begginers" tutorials around? The ones ive seen sofar look a little intimidating for such a noob as me Contributor RMD Owner vBulletin Owner Contributor vBulletin Owner | | | Join Date: Jun 2007 | Posts: 2,625 | Location: New York City | | Re: VPS and SSH How about this one? Cool Solutions: Easy Command-Line Introduction
It starts out simple, with ls, and works its way up to more complicated stuff. LOL I mean you really do not need to be in there unless doing something? Your VPS didnt come with a panel? I would be lazy and use the panel. Though now your talking about learning nix commands. The best way to learn is to play. But lol be careful and do not break anything.

Whilst i realise this can be done via the cp, the limitations of phpmyadmin wont allow large data transfers, hence my need and want to be in better control of things ;)
Your right though,it looks very easy to break things. I had a look at putty earlier, and i managed to get the time up lol,
And thanks all for the links and info sofar Contributor RMD Owner Supporters vBulletin Owner | | | Join Date: Mar 2008 | Posts: 849 | | Re: VPS and SSH Well there are scripts that are nice for that like ..You talking about downloading or uploading.? They have some nice auto stuff. I am lucky my host makes auto backups daily. So I never worry about it.

This is a chargeable thing, so I'm really just trying to do this myself, if the need to do so ever came again.
My understanding, is that i could do it via SSH
