What do you do when a moderator is no longer active?

When I took over a forum I kept on the original moderator team and added a couple as the place got busier. Now one of the original moderators has stopped coming around, and the others have picked up the slack. I've sent her a couple of emails basically saying I hope she's ok, but am not sure what to do about it otherwise. If she's no longer enamored of the forum, it might not be a good idea for her to retain Moderator status. On the other hand, if she's sick and makes a return after a long illness, it might not be pleasant to return and find yourself demoted. What would you do in this situation?

Wait till they come back and see what happened seems reasonable

I have strict rules for all staff on my site and if they need time away, I give them something called R&R. They can take it for up to two weeks at a time without having to do any mod duties. In your case, I would suspend Mod duties until you hear back. If and when she comes back then you should probably sit down with her and let her know that if she isn't interested, then at least have the courtesy to let you know. And if she wants to continue to be a mod, you can just switch her back over.

I think there's just a tendency on most people's part to see being a Moderator as a reward as opposed to a duty... not all of them make an effort to let me know if they're going to be offline for a significant amount of time, so maybe she thought it was a-ok.

You are absolutely right. A lot of the time they think they can just come and go as they please. I had this problem in the beginning, but learned very quickly to set up rules with consequences. I need dependable people helping me run my site and I need to know they are there when they should be.

I hope you get this figured out!

ya, wait till she comes back, but give it about 2 - 6 weeks, if shes still not back, simply send another e-mail, if nothing after 2 days, demote till she comes back, then ask her why shes been away.

i would wait till they come back, they should have maybe said something but you never know what might have happened.

if she is not replying to emails drop her down to regular member and explain to her why and if she has a valid reason then she make come back.
