What are some tricks you have used to lure members back

What other ways are out there that you have used to lure back old members that do not post anymore or members that signed up but not posted?

I know everyone uses emails but what else do you do to get some of them back and posting?

Well, we use e-mails letting them know of the new features and such available on the site. Or, about an upcoming chat or live trivia game. That usually gets them out of the woodwork.

Other than that, I haven't really had a big issue with participation (92 out of 157 members are 'active'... that's nearly 60% of my members).

But, I'd be interested to read about what others have done so that I'm ready when the time comes.

I've heard some of my currently active members talk about how they came back after hearing others talk about the forum positively, saying I'd made a lot of improvements. Of course, mine is a rather small niche community online or offline...

Hi all
Re: What are some tricks you have used to lure members back

Emails are good every now and again but I really hate it when I get an email every other week from a forum telling me about new features and new contests, etc. So use it sparingly.

I like the inactive user reminder email. Especially the new one that allows you to limit it to 1 time. So you do not hit them over and over like spam.

But I find the best way to get members back is to use pms. I forget what it was but there used to be a way to turn on notification emails for pms even if not on. I have it on by default anyway, but there was a way to turn it on for everyone. Then you could just send a friendly pm to all the inactive members.

There is even a nice mod that moves members that are inactive to new usergroup. That would help with something like that.

But really you can only hope they comeback. Great content and good features. Otherwise well I dont know. If someone knows some magical way I am all ears LOL.

I also find that it helps members stay active if you remove the active users off forum home. People tend to see a lower number than registered and then dont login.

I've got an automatic email program that sends members a message once they've been gone for a week or so... Then another email 21 days later...

Do any of these automatic email mods include the latest hot topics or anything like that?

Re: What are some tricks you have used to lure members back

I had a thought on how to get some members back. On TalkPa we have a social area where kinda like myspace or face book a member can request to be friends of the other members on the forum. I am sure Caddyman could tell you exactly what it is called. When you request to be a friend and email is sent to that member.

Anyway, as admin, I request to be everyone's friend. I noticed that there were some members that have not accepted my friendship ( about 100) and not visited in some time. I unfriended them on Thursday and then friended them again on Friday.

So far I have had about ten members return to the site and 3 have posted.

I am hoping that more will return and check out the site and get interested.

But it is a start and you gotta start somewhere.

You can modify the automatic mail message whenever you want. I'll probably update it according to time of the season and weather people are focused on weight loss, health or energy.

I can send a lose weight after the Hollidays message around ThanksGiving / Christmas...

Any other ideas?
