I don't think that those factors are "it" i think it's just that you want a theme, regardless of color or images, that speaks of your site, that you can glance at and almost know what the topic is without heavy reading. Branding is important.

Most Popular Car Colour
they may be just as good mechanically, but black sells a whole lot more then green. what you are doing is selling a membership that is free. now car comparisons don't work for websites for course, but color most certainly does count as a part of aesthetics.
your members are going to be looking at your site all day, as it is a forum...you can make any color work, literally any color idc if it is puke green. but you need a nice pallette to start with and good accent colors. you want it to pop but not be overbearing, you need to stand out.

fast loading is hugely important and it's good that you value it, but being a little too plain can/will leave you left in a sea of all the other gaming forums out there that look so so.
some gaming forums are WAY too heavy graphically, makes people wants to blow their brains out, and they will fail more then likely. finding a balance is the hard part of all this when it comes to site design.
the gaming niche in general is fiercely competitive, if you want to get ahead and be successful you better come with your A game. that includes a knockout design, content, features, etc.
