I would like to make my future logo apart of skin design, mainly the status icons (tells you if there are new posts in the forum, on the index page). I believe it's just two icons one colorful icon (new posts), and a faded/white out version of the same icon (old post). Is there more to it then that? Are there any rules to making these icons i.e. size restrictions, tips, etc I should know about?

You should be able to see all 3 on the bottom of your forumhome, you can see our default ones under the forum stats in the footer.

As for the size, I'd see what size the current ones are, and match up to them.

If you Photoshop, you can design the status icon, and apply various filters to certain layers. Then when you save them out, you only have one Photoshop file, but with all variations within the file.

Well, thats how I would achieve what you are trying to do.;)

Unfortunately, I'm not very web savy or photoship proficient. I do understand what your saying though. I'm glad I found out it was 3 icons I have to replace, good info and tips. I now have a clearer idea on what I need to request from a designer if I get to the point of branding those icons for my site.

If you ever need a quote on status icon design give me a shout. I'm actually redesigning a complete set for my site, including all the buttons, etc.

Cool, I'll keep you in mind Caddy. I really like your work.

Before parting with your cash try to design them on your own. You'll find it surprisingly easy. I mainly deal with vectors so when it comes to resizing images they always retain their quality no matter how large or small. Forget using filters, you can accomplish any effect by tinkering with the blending modes and the end result is far better visually.

Start by experimenting with the shape Tool and Pen Tool, the pen tool is a newbies nightmare to begin with though it's versatility in the creation of the many wonderful shapes makes learning this tool all the worth while. 99% of my works consist of dealing with vectors and the pen tool so I stand by my recommendation/method.

A quick example (as i had this opened in photoshop) the forum status icons on the left where designed in less than 5 minutes and purely from vectored shape (base) Pen tool (doc, padlocks arrow). always start simple as this will produce the best results.

Pending you have a graphics editor at hand or photoshop.
