adding a wiki

I've thought about adding a wiki, maybe not connected to this URL, but I see a lot of the same questions about SEO and optimization and I think a wiki could help answer some of the common questions..

what are your thoughts on adding a wiki to your forum ?

Re: adding a wiki

I think its an excellent idea. I have talked about adding wiki's to my sites as well as offer it to our customers. It's a great way to get a lot of relevant changing content on your sites.

Let me know when you get it running. I have a private wiki for my company that we use to help train new employees on processes, policies, etc. Very useful tool. We used MediaWiki 1.6.9 .

MediaWiki is fairly easy to install, configuring it on the other hand can be a challenge, there is no "admin cp" everything is done by hand via config files. I have a small wiki (www.howtodj.info), one of my forum moderators is handling the configuration side of things.

Re: adding a wiki

There are several scripts, the one easier then the other but... I saw several start and then quickly stop because once again spammers had fun filling it up. Not sure if it exists but I'd look for a wiki where added content needs to be aproven or passing an anti spam filter like akismet or you might end up quickly with a lot o garbage after spending a lot of time setting it up.

The install was a piece of cake, 2 - 5 minutes? I had one of my partners configure it and template it for us though so I don't know how difficult that was for him.

Our wiki is double passworded (PW to see get in our employee section of the site, then a PW to get into the wiki), so I will never have the spam problem. I'm sure you can set it up to monitor the revisions or only allow certain groups of people to add content to the wiki.

Is there a vB / wiki bridge out yet that would allow the same users / usergroups to post under the wiki? That was my original idea for one of my sites: blog / vB / wiki all merged together lol.

I'll stop rambling.

George

Re: adding a wiki

sounds good,, I still have a stack of work to do before I can do anything to this site

Maybe by the end of this next week, I'll have time to work over here again.

But I do like the idea of the wiki, that way we can add all the SEO info that ppl ask like "what are SERP's " and "why use mod_rewrite" and all those goodies that I know "I" get tired of answering all the time :p

Anyways, I'm still in favor of the wiki, it just make take a few days b4 I can buy the mod ( if it's a paid mod) and add it. Brent from vBulletinZone said he has this vbwikipro " or w/e" that is isn't going to use and is interested in selling with the brand free adde.. This is likely where I'll get the script.
-Brandon

anyone know where to dl media wiki ? I see like 20 different links.. i don't see the right one
nvm, found it
