Banning

Hi Brandon

I noticed you wrote

7. If you want to ban a person's IP, ban just that exact IP. Never ban a partial IP because for ISPs such as AOL and other dialups, you risk banning random users by accident.

However, if you band a single IP ... What really is that doing! Surely next time offender comes to your site he can simply get a new ip address. Plus there is a small chance you hit the wrong target ie two people share the same IP adress.

Happy-Harry;)

Re: Banning

well, we use 3 or 4 hacks to help with banning.. Your right, there is a chance that if I ban X ip, it may ban someone else too..

The users that I'm targeting already have enough money to buy vB, and 99.9999% will have their own pc with net access, so I'm not to worried about banning a group by mistake.

btw Happy, please take a sec and reply to the PM I sent you so that you can access the whole site ;)

There are a few different settings as to what the banned users See's..

like.. sever error
site broken
slow site ( you can adjust how slow )
and some other options that I don't remember.
Basically, it is buying you time and trying to discourage the user from coming back.. They might just think your site is jacked up.

yes, your login info is stored in your browser cookies. You can clear your cookies and then go back to the site, and you wont be loged in.. so if when they are loged in and the site is slow, they clear their cookies and log out and the site runs fine.. They might catch on..lol

Here is a list of hacks we use to ban users and keep away spam and banning..

Miserable users - vBulletin.org Forum
SpamBuster v1.0.0 (Stable): Identify, log and remove spam posts on your forum - vBulletin.org Forum
Akismet Anti-Spam - vBulletin.org Forum
these 3 are really great.

Cyb - Advanced Permissions Based on User's Post Count - vBulletin.org Forum
and this one is very handy
