Best way to convey ideas to designers

For me I'm not a designer and don't know the technical terms (drop shadow, blend, glossy etc) so when requesting a designer create something like a skin, website, banner, etc. what is the best way to convey my ideas to the designer to get what I want in addition to those extra details I don't know about

Lastly, if you are a designer, what helps the most to create what the customer (me) wants and how much description is too much? And what problems do you encounter most with designing something for someone?

I think the best way is to have some examples of things you really like and want your site to look like. Links to other websites, screenshots of other sites' design elements and things like that

Re: Best way to convey ideas to designers

I guess the best scenario would be if you could sit along side the designer, but that wouldn’t happen unless the designer is quite a good friend of yours. It would also help if you can sketch a little, that way you can maybe draw up the changes in paint and send them to the designer.

I just drew a rough picture in MS paint for my banner. He got the concept I wanted exactly. So pictures, more so then links of things I like worked better. On the revisions I said I wanted more fancier things, and he did it pretty easily. So you need a good picture/stetch to start.
