I installed vbadvance, but checking if I made the right decision since I don't really know what is available out there in the first place Anyways free or paid, what portal page software can you recommend?

I personally always used vbadvanced (as it is free and I am tight ) but I have heard mixed reviews about vBportal phpPortals - Home of vbPortal - Intro

I've used phpportal and still have a license, it's horriable to figure out IMO especially if you're new to vBulletin.
I'd use wordpress if you can, or vbadvanced.

I was going to ask about VbPortal. They're running a promo right now where I can provide my vBulletin receipt and they'll give me $20 off (which means a license will only cost $15). That's not a bad deal, and since I know vBulletin fairly well, I'm not too concerned with it being a little cumbersome at first. The question is: Is it any more awkward than VbAdvanced?

I have used VbAdvanced and I find it clumsy and irritating to get working. On top of that, it doesn't appear to have any SEO support without some major alterations.

I have also used vBDrupal and I can't really say I am a fan. It is definitely not simple. You have to have vBulletin, Drupal and vBDrupal all installed in order for them to work together. That's an extra application. On top of that, to make a single change you have to go through multiple options. It would take me 4x as long to do anything with vBDrupal than anything else. But hey, that's just my take. A lot of people swear by it and love it.
