got the psd file and looked at it in PS, it is transparent, in usercp it shows tranparent but once you look at it on forum it gets a background, guess it'll be tweaking to get it without a background, tested it on my forum.

Hmm... strange that vB auto drops a background on it.
I wonder if it has to do with their scripting that will resize and such.

Eric and El's last posts are somewhat correct... Because the latest versions of the forums use a crop for avatars, and because of this it saves them with a background, just as if the image was saved as a jpg..

Is there a way to turn off vB's handling of Avatars, and make it just rely on the size limitations set? Instead of resizing images to fit within the limits and what not?

just open it in PS, screenshot the postbit, add the BG in as that color. and save. it will appear to be transparent.
