How long can a vBulletin thread be?

The discussions about longest threads made me wonder how long a thread can be before the server starts to choke. And when the server starts to have trouble with it, will it just be slow to load that thread? Crash when the thread is loaded? Or just get slow in general?

if you start to notice a lag or bad things are happening, just close it and start a "part 2" thread.
