Re: Limited Guest Viewing - Has anyone tried this hack ?

I know. The developer says it lets the bots in I don't want to risk it tho.

I don't want to limit search engines but I want more members. I have to weigh each option carefully.

I'm all for it, works a treat.

Dramatic increase in sign ups, however still hard to get them to post but a few did come out of the woodwork.

Doesn't affect spiders that I saw, actually had an increase of them not decrease as the board evolved so I doubt it affects them.

Alright. I'll try it. Since I get NO people who sign up on their own (I don't think people even visit), this is doubt to get people to register for the first few days but hopefully the percentage increases.

LOL

Building a board from ground up is tough.

Dont know your site or what you do but I do know one very important thing.

Content is king.

Now look at this place, full of good content, I was walking around all over the place reading heaps, clicking here and there like a kid in a lolly shop ... no limits and no boundaries.

Now if a pop up came and said, yo boss hog, enoughs enough, want to see more just join up it's free you know, and bingo you get more members.

But then you get a whole heap of zero posting members, however there's ways of making them talk you know.

Now if you look at Brandon's posts you'll see he worked very hard at adding content, not meaningless 5000 posts of what he had for dinner last night but some good stuff. Well, you need to do the same. Start the topics, add the posts and links etc then the people will start reading them.

I also look at it this way, it's a lot easier to add logical content, posts and pics to a forum than a website. It's user friendly.

Well I do put up news regularly, and there are some good topics. But again I'll install this hack and see what it does.

Also add Welcome Headers to this. They go hand in hand.

Re: Limited Guest Viewing - Has anyone tried this hack ?

We had the Limited Guest Viewing hack installed for about 3 months. Uninstalled !!

During this period, yes registration did increase, however the number of new members that actually began to contribute or even post did not increase. The number of non posting members is all that actually increased. Sort of proves that all they wanted to do was read a thread/post.

Was also concerned about the crawl aspect and noticed via WOL a lot of error/permissions for bots. Was not willing to take a chance with the suggested things for bots, even the author is unsure about the effects.
