Migrating info from active forum to test forum

Good morning. I am looking for advice and assistance please.

I am running a forum on version 3.7.4 and have a test forum running v3.8.1. What I am trying to do is get the new forum set up so that I can make a seemless (as possible) transition from one to the other. The test forum also affords me the ablility to try things without affecting the live forum.

The initial data was transferred from the 3.7 db to the 3.8 db using Impex. What or how do I now merge over the new posts and users since the initial creation? If you need more info to answer this, please let me know.

why not just upgrade the 3.7 files to 3.8, than you wouldn't lose anything

Wouldn't upgrading to 3.8.* take care of what you wanted to do? Or am I missing something here?
