News feed

,

I am thinking to add a news feed that will automatically create a post.

Could someone tell me how to go about it, or where I can read some info about it?

Thanks

Ryan

Re: News feed

Ryan, do you mean that you'd like to pull an RSS feed to create posts within a forum?

If so, that's a built in feature of the vBulletin system. In your AdminCP, go to the bottom left where you'll see a link labeled "RSS Feeds". Expand that and click on 'add new feed' and then add your feed information. The URL for the feed would go in the "URL of feed" field, of course. Then, you select which forum you'd like it to post to as well as the 'username' that you'd like reporting the news.

Hope that helps.

Re: News feed

I use this too and think its great. I would caution that I found I want to moderate the posts made by the RSS because inevitably it will pull in some junk you probably don't want.

Re: News feed

Am I able to make the {feed:description} longer?

Or is this set buy the feed site?

Do you know if it is possible to get RSS feeds from lots of different sites related to one word e.g Crime?

Re: News feed

You would simply add separate RSS feeds for each site (or each URL for each site's categories) and add the word CRIME into the description field. This will pull any news item or posting with the word CRIME in it. Now, here's the thing....if someone has a completely unrelated topic such as...Paris Hilton for instance and decides to write a line like ...."wearing those shoes is a crime"...you'll get that posting/news story added to the forum because the word CRIME was in it. So, you still have to moderate the forum to make sure that inappropriate stories aren't being reported.

Re: News feed

Thanks for the info ArnyVee,

I will set the posts to be moderated first. and I have added a few different feeds to see how they would look when they were posted.

Is there a way to to adjust how much content gets posted in each post as some only add one line and then the link?

I really want more description in the posts, I have had a look in the cp where it has the template area where you can adjust what and where things are posted, Can I edit something there ?

this is what is written in that area

Quote:
'fieldname' corresponds to one of the following: title, description, link, id, date, enclosure_href and content:encoded.
So can I add date of post? whats the id and what does this mean? enclosure_href and content:encoded

I was having a look at the feeds and I am using Google for one of them and it is posting code?
This is an example:

Quote:
<img alt="" height="1" width="1">
Crime statistics Web sites vary in accuracy
Dallas Morning News, TX - 17 minutes ago
By SCOTT GOLDSTEIN / The Dallas Morning News A growing number of Web sites are crunching local crime data to offer concerned residents a constant flow of ...

What can I do about this?

Thanks for your help guys it is really appreciated

Re: News feed

I had this problem too. To fix it, I had to allow HTML for the user I created to make the posts.

Re: News feed

You know, I hadn't even looked into that. But, Warren's solution works, then just setup a default "NEWS" username that no one but you has access to (password-wise) and then allow HTML.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks Warren.
