Privacy Statements are they needed?

I noticed some sites have privacy statements while others do not. Are these privacy statements suppose to protect forum admins from legal action or something? Can we just copy and paste someone else's statement into our forums since they are all the same anyway?

Any one can sue any one, however it is always best to include Privacy Policy and TOS statement on your website to ensure that you are some what protected and people know what they are getting into!

I don't think I've been to a forum that has collect or use information for advertising purposes. It makes me angry to always go through things like this just to "watch your back" from a lawsuit, even if you did nothing wrong.

Privacy Statements & Terms of Use serve as an extra layer of protection. Given that anyone can sue anyone for anything, it helps to have an extra barrier of protection should you ever need it. While most people don't read them, it would be a good idea to have a link to it.

In general, most say the same general things. Just make sure that your site actually does what it says in the notices.
