Quick question about the Shoutbox trend

This may just be me, but why would a forum need a shoutbox? Is the original purpose of a forum not to provide a message board? A place to leave messages for others. However, in the past year, I have seen an upsurge of "shoutbox"es and similar implementations. First of all, these people are just asking for a JavaScript injection or other XSS. Secondly, does a shoutbox not defeat the purpose of a forum?

Just something to think about...

Re: Quick question about the Shoutbox trend

Some sites I've done asked for a shout box and still have very active forums.

The member has more to say on them I guess. they don't want to make post that say " hey, I'm back "

I don't see it being helpful here really, I tried it a few times but have decided against it.

Re: Quick question about the Shoutbox trend

I tried a shoutbox on one of my smaller forums, the novelty quickly wore off and a fellow admin replaced the shoutbox with a chat app. Much better.

I have yet to see a shoutbox implemented on a forum to a standard that is pleasing to my eye.

[AJAX/Flatfile] vBShout 2.1 - vBHackers.com - vBulletin Modifications, Hacks, and Help

this is one that I would suggest, but I don't think SB's are that great.

I also believe the shoutboxes slow down the forum no? I installed flash chat which I think is much better than a shoutbox...

Re: Quick question about the Shoutbox trend

Personally I think shout boxes are useless, but can be a useful feature to other members. People are fascinated with all sorts of trinkets, and this may just be a gadget that'll keep them coming to your forums among other things.
