Setting Up a Test Forum?

I'm afraid of updates, and messing up my forum. I have an extra domain laying around, so I want to make a test forum on this domain. Is there anything special I have to do to make my test vbulletin forum legal in the sense vbulletin doesn't think I'm having two forums. Do I even need to make it on a new domain? Also can I use the test forum for family/friend communications, but not open to the global public?

Lastly, my current forum is in a folder like

Ftp:mysite.com/public_html/Luigi

When I change "luigi" my forum goes dead (404 page). How do i change the name to that folder without messing up anything? Thanks in advance

It is best to upload the test forum in a test folder which is password protected to ensure that others can’t access it. You can use it for development but not for communicating with friends and family, since that would actually constitute to being an active forum.

You'll definitely want to pass protect the test forum. vB.com has some type of tracking, they'll know you have two sites up with one license, but if it's pass protected, and clearly a "Test board" they'll let you run with it.

You are permitted to run one test instance of the software. The directory must be called "testvb" and must not be publicaly accessible...meaning password protected.

When you change the directory, you need to update your config.php with the correct path as well, otherwise you might encounter errors.

Re: Setting Up a Test Forum?

Thanks for the info on the test forums. I'm glad I asked before I got my license revoked.

As for the second question, I'm going to have to reinstall vbulletin (screwed something up) so I guess it doesn't matter.

Re: Setting Up a Test Forum?

Well there are no hard and fast rules about it, my test forum is on another domain and I have checked with vb support staff and they are ok with it, since there is no traffic to that domain.

I got my forum fixed thanks to Mike. How to I change my folder again? I looked in the config file and there doesn't seem to be anything that refers to the folder name. And we're are talking about the config file located in the included folder right? Thanks again.

Re: Setting Up a Test Forum?

you really never need to edit the config file unless you are doign it for the first time. If you are changing the forum folder, then go into your adminCP. They go to the options and change the forum url to the /forum or whatever else you are changing. Then drag and drop the contents into your new folder.
