trying to make header a different width from the rest of the page

I'm spinning off Ice Cream Forum onto a site of its own, and trying to improve the template. I want to make the header wider than the page below as it is on the original site, but whether I use tables or CSS and divs, the top part only extends out to the right instead of centering. (Yes, I've added align="center".) Is vB doing this somehow?

vB is probbly not doing it and I'm far from a coder, you probably know more then me honestly, i would just pay a couple duckets and make a service request in the service area here on vBs
