I just seen this hack

has anyone tried it ? I've been wanting something to replace the side columns we have here and fix the space for it on the Hex style as well.

I'm thinking this would work out great, just wondering if anyone else has tried it, and if so.. do you have a live demo ?

havent tried that yet

i HAVE done both right and left

right was buggy, didnt line up right

left is good (what i have now)

i may give it a shot......maybe

yes tried, not much luck as a lot of the variables are only called into forumhome. you have to do quite a bit of extensive coding to allow it in the right(left)column template. but overall a great mod

Hi Brandon,

Yes I've tried it and am using it on Chess Forums now

Found it to be pretty good, I did need to customize the template a bit to get the content how I wanted, but all in all was pretty easy, and a good mod. It also has a handy setup option called 'Adsense Appropriate' so that it will only display the left/right column on adsense allowed pages, and that can be set for each side column independently.

I actually installed this here for a few hours and then removed it, it didn't work like I really wanted

I seen that adsense option, it was nice but the only pages I wouldn't want ads to show on are the register.php page and the advanced editor ?

I installed it. I don't like side columns, so if I did like them this would be a great hack. I did try it with my adsense, but it didn't make as much as my banner so I decided to remove it. But I believe the hack was very well made and by far the easiest hack for side columns.

Hi Black Cobra I would give it a go as I mentioned previously it has the option to display the side column on adsense appropriate pages only. I think with adsense it depends how many members your forum has, you don't want to start putting potential new members off because they think there is too any adverts on the forum! I don't like to have ads on side columns dispite the fact that Google says they perform better...I've found that having ads right below the navbar do better. I also have ads inside the first and last post which are performing better than I thought...they are even doing better than my banner ad now :o

If you get enough traffic, sign up to vibrantmedia and see if you will get accepted for intellitxt. I like having those ads...they definitely help me with earning more revenue (since I have a $300+ server cost...).

GFin is correct. You are just going to have to tough it out until you start getting enough traffic. 1 thing you might want to do though...if you have the site open to guests, make the ads only viewable to guests (with an if condition) and in the header message (using welcome headers mod) say that when you are a member, there are no ads. :P

Where it says OTHERS, put what ever other usergroup ID that you would like to show the ads. What I've done in the past was use it for guests and those that have not verified their emails.

Other ideas you can do (which I've also done in the past) was give members the ads but have a "Premium" usergroup and let them know if they donate $XX to the site that they will no longer see the ads.

Let me know how it works.

Also, here's another code that might come in handy:

As you can see, the "!" indicates that it will show what ever is in between the if statement besides the usergroup(s) you choose.

I would really like to add a side column to the left, but every one I find seems to have errors, there are also complaints on vb.org for this one slowing down load times.
Does anyone know of a sidebar for all forum pages that actually works?

The only hurdle Ive faced with that is that it requires an "Intergration" to use the sidebar and that isnt explained in an understandable way. They have a sticky over there that Ive read about 10 times, even had the demo ACP open and tried to do what they are explaining, and was totally baffled..

Whoever thought having a sidebar on a forum would be soooo difficult...

That is for "Forum Home" only.... I want it on ALL pages...

I use Kerry Annes lefthandcolumn one, which is basically part of the one you're looking at. Haven't noticed any loadtime differences at all.

We have USC in both our forums and I think it rocks! It's very customisable, easy to use and you can put absolutely anything in there. I think it's a top mod and I have never had any problems with it.
