I guess I need to do something with my forums skin-wise..

any reason not to just go with the vBSEO skin they give away for free over there?

Or is that not a good idea?

Nope, it's actually a very nice skin that vBSEO offers.
Though you can find a bunch of other free skins @ vB.org as well.

You would only lose SERPS issues if you have modified the header meta-tags, or any code relevent to SEO. Apart from that most styles will all work fine.
