What hosting service do you use?

I currently have midphase for a host. This is what they offer: $7.95 a month
25,000 MB Disk Space
Free Domain for Life
1,500,000 MB Bandwidth

My forum is small, and I have a small website also. I am getting fed up with them. They guarantee 99% up time, but I have not figured out on what yet?
My site is down more often than up seems like. Every week since 10/29/06 I have had a open ticket with them, about the site being down.

Anybody have any suggestion's?

Thanks

Re: What hosting service do you use?

I've gone through several host that claimed to be the best and I'd have unexplained downtime.
what really got me was when I would ask them why the site is down and they would say it's up for them even though a monitoring script that I'd have on the site, would say it's down..

anyways, we use Fluid Hosting: FreeBSD and Windows Hosting now and the up-time is great as well as the support is top notch.

Re: What hosting service do you use?

Well in a couple weeks I will probably move to somebody else. The site went out day before yesterday, and they claimed someone was on my server overloading it. They said they were going to investigate it.
This morning's excuse was a malfunction with the data center, I already had this excuse once already a few days ago.
A friend of mine also has midphase, he has a big forum. When he added vBSEO he had to go to a dedicated server, I mean he is paying out the wazooo and still gets a fair share of down time.

Re: What hosting service do you use?

my last host gave me at least 50 excuses why they had issues,, even after time and time again that I said I need my sites up, this is the whole point of the web. well after the 3rd month I told them I was leaving, I still had 2 months paid too but if my sites aren't up, they it's pointless.

Re: What hosting service do you use?

I pay £40 a month and everything is unlimited - unlimited bandwith - unlimited space, email accounts, ftp accounts etc and you also get a free co.uk domain name

I was a member on a well known forum and they offered it to members.

Thanks, Paul

Re: What hosting service do you use?

well it is today hard to know who is a real datahouse and who is a reseller that hires a few servers and then plays hosting. I did hosting this way for several years, now it is more a private service I can offer for a few. Since I can't give full time support. Still it isn't easy these days if you have a server hosting about anything. You have those really carefull and always up to date with scripts and you have those who known a damn and just blow up servers with nasty things, if it isn't illegal already. I'm now moved to a server where each and every account is known... and centrally managed, no more open hosting ... tired to restore accounts every x months after a hacked server.
For sure if you want real uptime, you have to pay since the datahouses need quite some people running from one box to the other to keep them alive and they are well paid mostly...

I've been with my host for over 1 year and they have been really good to me, up til a couple of months ago. I'm hoping to be able to move to a VPS in a couple of months

are you getting a vps with the same host ?

Your sites always run fast for me, I've never seen downtime with them either.

Sounds questionable to me, too... maybe 250MB/2100MB, but...

if that is the case, what a deal !!

Brandon are you still happy with the host? I am leaning between Your hosting company and F5 Hosting and http://www.asmallorange.com/services/vps/

My current host (godaddy) the worst on the planet, keeps trying to sell me a newer server everytime something goes wrong.

BTW whats up with the images Icons smilies?:2smile:

Re: What hosting service do you use?

do you split the sites up ?
like do you use one server for ftp, and one for database ?

I want to learn more about this, I don't need to know now, but hopefully in a year I will

Re: What hosting service do you use?

I have a front end server, and a database server.

Both are dual processor dual core xeons (4 x 2.0GHz per box), both have 4gig of ram, the front end server has one single 250gb sata II hard drive, the database server has four 73GB 15k scsi drives in raid 10.

Its actually really easy to split up vbulletin to two servers, its all done in the config.php file, rather then point to localhost, you point it to the IP of the dedicated server.

I have a really good tech admin who keeps my servers running, but I think thats the basics.

Re: What hosting service do you use?

it`s not really that good to split vBulletin from the config.php, since it`s limited. I would add 2 frontend servers, low-end, just to handle apache load balancing, then 1 server for storage, and 1-2 mysql ones, with load balancing. It`s hard to get it done, but easy for people that know it. That`s how webhostingtalk.com has the forum running(almost, but same principle).

Its always laggy for me as well, I believe it has something to do with either the server load, or the server location.
