When upgrading vBulletin versions, which files do you make sure not to overwrite or keep a copy of before upgrading?
For example, I always forget about my favicon.ico and my config file. So, I'm starting to make a list to get a backup folder on my desktop to ensure that I'm ready when I do the upgrade.
So, what other files should I keep in mind not to overwrite without having a backup? |

| Re: When upgrading vBulletin version.... You don't have to upload your config.php file. There've been no changes in it in the 3x series. Just delete it from your upload pack. |

| Re: When upgrading vBulletin version.... It shouldnt overwrite the config file anyway. But the best thing to do is delete the image folder, unless you havnt updated in a very long time, and delete the favicon.ico like you said. And anything that you modified your going to have to remodify if it's been awhile, if not just make sure not to overwrite anything you changed. Just like Caddy said LOL |

If you've added an updated spiders.xml, bin that one too. |

| Re: When upgrading vBulletin version.... What I do is copy the config.php file, make a backup of the vbseo settings (if it has vbseo)
I delete the favicon and license page from the new upload folder before uploading the new files |

| Re: When upgrading vBulletin version.... I am doing my first big upgrade from 3.7.0 to 3.8.3
My first task was to do a back up.
What I did was to use the CP
Maintenance --> Database Backup I checked All Database tables to include in backup, and then,
Backup database to a file on the server, and I did this and it saved to a file that was suggested, it looked like this.
./forumbackup-06-20-2009-ba5d8.sql
then once I had checked at the end of the file it said
### VBULLETIN DATABASE DUMP COMPLETED ###
I then copied it to my computer. where I have it saved.
Now the next step I think I should do is delete that backup file from my ftp so it cant be accessed ?
and after reading about some of the files that I should not update I am a little confused as it says to include the install file.
I have done lots of modifications and added lots of mods to my board and I dont know what I should do? and I am using a custom skin as well
If I upgrade all files will I loose anything? and will it not make changes to files that I have modified untill I do the code changes manually?
I really have to get this done as I have been putting it off for a long time and I would love some to help me out with some tips
Thanks
Ryan |

| Re: When upgrading vBulletin version.... Ok Mikey,
Can you or someone help me with the other questions that I have
This is what I am doing before I start the upgrade
I have done a backup and it saves it to a folder which I think is accessible by the public? Is the best thing to do is copy that backup file to my pc then delete that file from my ftp?
and is that a full back up? |

| Re: When upgrading vBulletin version.... yes you want to backup your database, you can do it in cpanel.
like cpanel>mysql databases>full backup
that'll drop a file in your root on your server, download it to desktop, and yes, if you backed up your files to a folder on your server, download them to your pc then delete the >backup<. |

| Re: When upgrading vBulletin version.... Thanks Caddyman,
I will do that, I then will do a test upgrade on my test board and I will go with the option of no images as it is a custom skin.
I am still not sure what to do with the config file so I think I might just leave the one that I have and not overwrite it?
Anyone have any other tips for upgrading? |

| Re: When upgrading vBulletin version.... Great video Caddyman,
I have done the upgrade on my test forum and there were no problems,
The next thing I have to do is update templates, I have 10 to do.
I have had a look at the differences between some of the files and compared them,
The color coding I think is rather confusing
it says Text removed from old version
Text changed between versions Text added in new version
do you have any tips on how to make this a bit easier to do, do I make the changes to the old file or make it the new one?
where it says Text added in new version is it as simple as adding that code to the old file?
As I have, a custom skin with a sidebar, which is a change from the default file, it is displayed in the pink background color which means Text removed from old version.
But this is text added to my original file I think, and in the comparison this is displayed in the pink background and next to it there is no text just a yellow background.
I am rather confused?
Please help
Regards
Ryan |
