Problem getting rid of a mask in photoshop

I'm trying to create a couple of new buttons (for the triple post hack with a twiist I'll be attempting tomorrow), but when I opened the psd I found I couldn't select the two layers that compromise the button image. This flummoxed me, and I tried various ways of selecting them until I realized the entire image was surrounded by a bounding box. Tried to get rid of that and then found there was a mask moving around. Now I don't know how to delete that and get things back to normal. All the sites on the Internet say to drag the layer with the mask to the trash can, but how do I know which is the layer with the mask?

zip the psd and post it here, i can take a look, but i think all you have to do is click the layer that is masking and go to layer dropdown>release clipping mask.

That's the problem, I can't see any layer that is... hopefully you can figure out why I can't select anything

that is rather perplexing isn't it? i cant seem to figure out how to edit it either, i would just remake the background of the button the way you want it. use the existing shapes and stuff as a go bye and plop them under the text.

At least I know I'm not the only one who can't figure it out I can't draw to save my life, guess I'll try taking the psd to a photoshop forum for diagnosis.

well you dont have to draw to make just the little background images what you want. use the rounded rectangle tool in the pen tool flyout. you can make just the solid button part and put them behind the text/images on the psd.

what color do you want the buttons, i can prolly make them.
