Building a link directory

Hi folks,

Since I've started creating websites about 2 months ago, I've seen more and more link directories than I ever thought there was.

And now I'm thinking about building my own. For no other reason than... Why not? ;)

I've never done it before and think it would be a good challange.

Does anyone have any advice please?

Templates to use, starting points, server requirements, etc.

Thanks
Glen

Link directories don't take much for server, at least mine never have.

I suggest using phpLD for your link directory script. David has a great support community.
It's 25$ for the paid version, plus 5$ for access to the support forum.. which is well worth it..
They have a free version of the script (2.x) but I would suggest using the paid version.. I think it's up to 3.2... It has articles submissions in the stock setup, which gives you the chance to sell links and article spots ;)

I am using the free version of phpld and its pretty good if you are planning to start a free directory, though for a paid one you should use the paid version.

Is the directory in your sig running the free version ?
It looks pretty good if so, the main thing I don't like about the free version and the paid, is the free version doesn't have a "details" page about the link.
Maybe it does, and I don't see it.. but like on this page

Free Travel Directory, Roaming Activated.com - Top Hits

you have the listings,
but on this page
Quality Deep Link Directory- Recreation > Travel
(which has has very little modding)
you see the "read me" page

idk, to me, it's another page that gets indexed, and is another page to offer for the paid listings.

If you do go with phpld, you might want to bookmark this page
rakCha resources Blog Archive phpLD v3.3 Deep Links Mod - Easy 1 step install

It shows how to add the ability to offer more then one link for submissions.

cheers

Yes it is running the free version, slightly modified to make it more search engine friendly.

I agree the paid version is certainly worth what it costs, however since I was planning to make a free directory I went with the free one, even though I have already made more than half of what the paid version costs .

Starting free until you have enough for paid is a good idea.
The upgrades are almost painless too
