Domain Name question?

I am helping someone setup a new website. Their first choice for domain names shows the name is taken, but expired 5/19/09. The current owner seems to be a squatter and is associated with 34K domains. The who is status lists it as expired -pending delete.

When can I jump on this domain for him? Do I have to wait for it to be deleted or can I go through a domain service and lay claim to it now?

Any help is appreciated....

Re: Domain Name question?

You can backorder it through GoDaddy so that as soon as it expires, you have the chance to buy it. If others have it backordered, I think it goes into bidding.

Normaly you would be able to catch it a couple days after expires, maybe the owner has it still on hold. You could try it with backordercompanies like pool.com. They will try to get it for you, but it costs $60. (there are also other ones around, cheaper, but I had most succes with Pool)

So it depends on the domain. If it is special it is probaly also picked up by others and in that case it can get to an auction. If it is not so special, but you think others are interested as well, than I would go for backordering.
Is it not so special, than you could wait till it is free.

I've never backordered with GoDaddy, so I don't know what the success rate of getting you the domain is, but it's only $18.99, so it's worth a try in my opinion.

there is no success with backordering a domain, you may loose your investment if the actual owner is tracking these backorders and wait for it to renew...

change your domain choice, that's the best you can do.

Yeah, obviously. But do domain squatters really update all of their domains? I'm not familiar with the industry, so I don't know.

There is succes with backordering domains, why else would those companies survive? And beside that, I personaly have succes also. Win some, lose some. But it does not cost any cent unless the domain is succesfully backordered. (at least withPool.com and I know others do the same). So if the domain is woth it for you, why not give it a try?

Re: Domain Name question?

We looked at back ordering and it was not worth it to him, we're going to hold out a bit longer to see if it becomes available in the next few weeks. But we're actively looking for new domain names.
