How can I protect directories under my domain

I want to be able to protect the subdirectories from someone just typing the name of my site and then a directory.

I know I have to CHMOD the directory, but when I try various settings, the files within that directory become Forbidden as well.

Other than hot link protection..any other input or ideas?

Re: How can I protect directories under my domain

Do you mean protect by a password or to not be able to list the index of files in that directory?

Re: How can I protect directories under my domain

They way I would suggest is the same way vb does it.
They create a blank html file named "index.html" and drop it into the directory. That way when anyone visits the directory they will be shown a blank page.

Re: How can I protect directories under my domain

If you search around a little, you can put a little bit of html code in that index.html file that will redirect them to the main page as well
