Been a admin on several sites and most of the community I know are all on linux. I am striking out on my own and being a Windows baby I was wondering if Windows OS is as good as Linux for VB?

Will have server first of next week, ordered linux and cpanel because it is what Iam used to, but I have lots of time on windows networks. I still have time to change if it won't affect the end result.

I only use Linux on my web servers. Much more robust and reliable. IMO

Most definately. I prefer Linux, as I use it on my desktop, and know my way around it pretty decent.

Linux only here.. To be specific only CentOS.

I'm planning to use Windows, only because that's what I know. How difficult is it to get up to speed on Linux? I can't imagine knowing nothing about Windows and just beginning to use it. Isn't it a similar learning curve and where can I find info on learning the basics?

For me being a newb to Linux and a Windows Consultant, linux and cpanel was a natural feel and while not as granular as windows, simplicity is its strong point IMO. One web interface does what is equal to having to know IIS, AD, Backup and exchange in Windows.

I had email, basic install, server level directory security on admincp/Modcp, data base creation done in 3 hours from the first time I saw cpanel.

I would have to say if your used to windows stay away from DirectAdmin, I hated it, so I suggest Cpanel.

Linux if you going to use vbulletin. As stated before, its alot more reliable and compatible with most scripts. Although recently I was looking for a script to take thumbnails of a site which I couldn't find one to worked with linux. The only ones I found needed a Windows server that could run exe's. Unless you need something as special as that, go and stay with Linux.

That's the way I always was until I started running my own site. As previously stated Linux + cPanel = really simple and straight forward.

OK, so it appears that Linux is the unanimous choice. To further display my ignorance in this area... If I am hosted on a server that provides Linux (e.g. Fluid Hosting), do I need to purchase any software to run on my PC, (other than Vbulletin) or can I just sign up with them and start running my forum with Vbulletin? :s4:

You don't need to purchase anything. vBulletin runs on PHP on any platform.

I run Linux as a secondary OS on all my Win machines. The easiest implementation can be found at Cygwin Information and Installation. You don't need a boot partition with this variant.

I' recommend getting a few Linux "live" CD/DVD distros and playing around with them, over Cygwin, personally.

Linux is better than Windows when used as a web server. You will find tons of information for linux. It is also more secure and reliable.

I don't get what you mean by windows networks. If you are classic windows XP guy, windows server is completely different than end-user windows operating systems. If you mean you are expert in windows networks, I have no idea how it will help in web server administration.

If you are accustomed to linux and cpanel, there is no need to check for windows alternative for the next few years as MS is very unlikely to come up with a better OS for web servers.

I'm still not clear on this. If you're hosted on someone else's shared server like SiteGround do you make a choice when you sign up with them (of Windows vs Linux), or do you make this decision only when you have your own dedicated server?

Secondly, (and I apologize for perhaps being off-topic here) who has had good or bad experiences with SiteGround?
