Online Videos Cut into TV Viewing

Apparently you don't need that big screen high definition TV after all.
The surge of online video content is starting to eat into the number of hours people spend watching television, according to a survey released this week.

The study, conducted in the UK by market research firm ICM and commissioned by the BBC, suggests the explosion of Web sites like YouTube and MySpace are keeping viewers tethered to their desks instead of anchored to their couches.

Nearly three quarters of British respondents said they watch more online video now than a year ago. Despite the growth though, online video viewers are still a minority, with only 9 percent of respondents saying they watch online TV regularly, and 13 percent occasionally. Another 10 percent said they expect to start watching online TV in the coming year.

This is the effect of broadband. The more you have people with large tube access, the easier it will be. I don't for sure not even podcasts on 56k, to long to wait.
But I recently installed computer and DSl for parents in law (well over 60 and first computer ever )
For them fooling around the net is just , Google something and click and if there is a little video to watch... they do... they don't even wonder how it works... they just like the way it works, it brings together book, radio and tv into one screen.

I will agree with that, I spent a bucket full of cash on a 42" Panasonic Plasma HD screen and spend 75% of my time at home on my PC's in my office with the latest episode of whatever I want to watch blasting over a PC, with the added advantage of no commercial breaks.

Thats technology for you and it will only get worse for the normal viewing figures as technology improves.

I'm the same as Spikeman, forked out nearly £3,000 nearly 2yrs ago now for a 42" plasma screen. I personally don't watch it, but my children do. I got Sky satellite tv, which also broadcasts movies via broadband to watch at anytime.

So, why I splashed out for a 42" in the first place, when I watch either programmes on my 19" monitor or a 21" tv in the bedroom... seems a bit ironic.

Yeah, you read it correct £3,000... course LCD has taken over now, with better technology than my expensive plasma!
