We got a spammer recently, named Nancy and she started a spam thread. So I went ahead and banned her and shortly after getting banned for spamming our forum, she contacted me:

Because you are banned for spamming our forum and the domain for which you were spamming has been blacklisted. Which means even genuine users can't post the url of your site any more!

Better think twice before spamming our forum, also we are tracking your ip address and any further attempts at spamming our forums would result in us contacting your ISP (VSNL) and Ahemdabad police!

I had someone contact me saying they can't see their post or log in any more as well a few months ago.

I told them to re-register and post again and see what happens.

I think they spam and then have to submit the URL in order to verify and get credit for it. They are probably paid by the spam post.
