Websites to be answerable for content in India

Quote:
Google, Orkut and Rediff might change the way they function, if the amendments proposed by a Parliamentary Committee go through, reports CNBC-TV18.

Websites might soon be legally answerable for the information they carry. A Parliamentary Committee has suggested amendments to the IT Act 2000. It has proposed to put the onus of the information posted on websites on their hosts.

This is the stupidest legislation that I have come across. This effectively means government is trying to restrict the freedom of speech by making sites liable for any thing posted by the user!

I hope you're not surprised ?

This is slowly happening in many countries. They try to find a legal ground to close any site that publishes something they don't like. Easiest way is to regulate the site owner ...

So who exactly gets busted ...

1/ The poster who posted the whatever?

2/ The site owner who published it or didn't remove it?

3/ The website host who sells space and bandwidth?

---------------------

It could well be high time for something to be done.

You'd be singing a different tune if you were the victim of a Google bomb or some rival forum slandered the living chit out of you.

This area needs tidying up. The net is now media, just like TV and newspapers there has to be some control. If papers print slander they are as liable as the author, there's some onus on professionalism and accuracy. However papers do print opinion.

Many times editors have their column where they have their say. However in their say they tactfully ensure they do not slander or denegrate their target ... saying is go hard on the situation not the people.

I see it as a plus, currently the net is full of scams.

Now have a look at this scam I busted, it was shaping up for a good milking of peoples purses even with YouTube ads. read all the posts.

SCAM A Million Trees For The Amazon Rainforest SCAM - Tree World | Tree Information Forum | International Arborist Forum

If you go to the YouTube site you'll also notice that I posted my warning in the comments after some suckers thought it was a great idea.

Now the irony is I contacted Youtube that they were assisting a scam ... never heard a thing and the vids still there.

So, as a forum owner I checked and validated, but sites like YouTube even when alerted dont give a hoot.

Yes, it's time for change.
