What should I charge to set up a vB site?

Not sure where this goes, so feel free to move it..

I am working on securing a job to create a forum/community for a company I deal with . They are medium-sized, with around 200 employees, and a large client base.

Is there a "standard" charge for setting up a vB install for them? I was thinking about this:

- custom style
- vBSEO
- vBlogetin
- Pligg and/or Joomla integration
- one year of administration by me
- all in for US$7500

Is that too much? Not enough? I am really out of my element on this one...

Just one forum correct? And 1 year of administration... that is a lot of time. As for the whole setting up thing, that is nothin to do. I would say like 750 for that in itself, excluding the custom skin... which could be anywhere from like 500-1000 I guess? Not sure, I never did pricing, but that is just a stab at it. so like 2500 max jus to do all the setup with no admining I would say... Brandon will help ya out soon

The biggest question for me is what is my time worth and what are they going to ask me to do? I had thought that a flat-fee would be a good approach rather than per hour or per task. If the price is $7500 I feel like its a decent amount of money for doing something I enjoy, and they don't have to worry about additional costs.

Yea how much time to do you plan to set aside everyday or every week to admin the site? That is probably where you should add up your planned hours and charge accordingly since I think that will be the biggest part.

Re: What should I charge to set up a vB site?

That is the real question. How much time are you dedicating to the project ? If you are just in charge of the updates and any code maintenance then I'd say its a pretty fair bid.

You can assume that there will be about 10 to a dozen upgrades for vb and prolly most of the hacks and such.

As long as the site doesn't get many large hacks added, the upgrades should be half-way easy.

I've never put a bid for a year of development, so this is just a rough estimate. Hope it all works out for ya, sounds good so far.

would a person really pay that much though? thats alot IMO for a guy getting into forums. and for a established forum owner that would have that kind of cash, they usually already have a tech they work with

$2500 to $7500 to setup/host/one time modification package is a great price.

I wouldn't include the maintenance in that price....too many loop holes. You'll never stop working for free.

This is what I do:
One time set up fee that includes domain/1-yr server/site setup and 1st month bi-weekly maintenace.

Additional fees:
  1. Optional maintenance package that includes updating software/hacks and general text/data/news changes; that can be done on a bi-weekly or monthly. Maintenance fee can be set up as follows: (NO these are not my rates)
    • Bi-Weekly: $35/$910yr
    • Monthly: $70/$840yr
    • Quarterly: $150/$600yr
  2. Advertising package....
    • Break it down into categories on subject of forum/site
  3. Hourly....$85hr to $150
OK....Lets all go make some money!

I agree.

I would rather pay a one time fee for an install and other stuff as needed and spend the other cash on advertising, promotions, etc.

There are people who will admin a site for free, maybe throw them a gift certificate once a year.
