What type of server should I make my old PC ?

I have an old pc that had XP on it, it has a gig of ram and something like a 1.67 ghz cpu.

I have 2 80 gig HD's on it now.

I think I have a copy of win2k and 2003 server, I'm wondering if I should go with a linix server. If so, what distro should I use ?

thanks

You'd be better off with a linux server - more compatible with most PHP, MySQL stuff, etc.

If you want to run a proper server, then you could use a distro like Debian, but if you're just learning linux then a more user-friendly distro like Ubuntu would probably be better.

I downloaded the ubuntu sever today, but I think I got the wrong one.
I'm downloading 6.06 now and will play with it tomorrow.
I guess I forgot to mention what type of server I want to play with.

I'd like a web server, so I can install apache, php and mysql.
I'd like to make a file server that we can keep some backups.
I'd like to make a DHCP server, and maybe make a firewall.

Any other cool things that you can do with servers ?

I found this "how to" this eve

Set up a samba server as soon as the upgrade of samba happens. MS released the source code so the linux folks can make it work right.

I have a linux samba storage device. I hope the mfgr posts an upgrade when this happens.

Ubuntu server edition is for those who just want a plain server with no gui.

That Howtoforge tutorial is a really great one, it should be easy to follow.

Re: What type of server should I make my old PC ?

I guess I have to have an OS on the HD to start with ?
I have 2 drives.. 2 x80gb
I've deleted and partitioned both drives to 1 partition each.
When I reboot to either of the ubuntu server cd's, I get a message that no OS is detected.
Also, I have booted from the cd, and get this message.
I'm still not giving up, but it's taking a lot longer then I had planned.

Ubuntu server edition will include SAMBA, so you could make a nice little box of drives and populate it with media perhaps. I dunno. I'm putting stuff out there that might be useful. If ya want to experiment, the options are endless.

Make sure that your BIOS is set to boot from CD first. I don't know which BIOS you have, but generally when your computer turns on it will ask you to press either <F1>, <F12> or <DEL> to enter BIOS settings.

EDIT: You should try Ubuntu 7.10 instead of 6.06, it's newer and more secure etc

A mail server might be a good idea also.

Ive had problems with shared hosting and sending emails to users on vbulletin.

Most hosts allow 100 or maybe 200 emails within a 24hr time frame.

If your on a dedicated server you can still have problems from your host with large amounts of email going out.

Ive used the mail que hack and a few mass email apps other than that imo an mail server is ideal.

I thought about making a mail server, but I don't think I will.
We're on a vps, and have never had any problems when sending out newsletter blast. It's over 2600 within a few mins.

I will just be happy when I can install this ubuntu server and can start playing.
