Re: When do you look for moderators and how many is too many?

Right now the only moderator for my site is a guy I live with, we have very different schedules, so he is on when I'm sleeping, now granted I'm usually on 20 hours out of the day, or at least it seems that way.

I agree it can be forum to forum. To me the best time to "hire" a mod or admin is when you can't handle the workload yourself.

Some do, mostly in the ways of gift cards or hardware/software. I have seen a couple of forums that pay their mods in cash payment. The only problem is that you shouldn't be paying anyone over $600.00 in a year’s time or they will have to claim it on their taxes.

Good point on the $600 mark. We have to W9 people we subcontract out to for my business so I'm pretty familiar with that whole route.

The one mod I planned on paying I just worked a deal out in exchange for SEO work so I won't have to worry about paying someone for a while, at least over $600 / year.

Thanks, I would like to hear others opinions on rewarding / paying their moderators.

George

some years ago I was in free hosting and the forum was the support area, most mods were volunteers but we ended giving them a nice hosting account with extra features... they never asked for it but in the end I was embarrassed ... they did so much work....

I have WAY too many mods, but in a good way. Might be hard to explain to you "hardcore" folks. My mods have different areas they are incharge of, but are all global mods too. Almost all of my members are women and can get.....catty at times. Because it is a parenting forum, we can not have "drama" that often times comes with 50 women chatting at once.

It sounds like its working out still

My first forum was sorta like that.. I'd have about 90 forum sections in all, and had something like 25 mods, 3-4 supermods and 2 admins

that was b4 I knew what I really had with that much traffic..

Re: When do you look for moderators and how many is too many?

At present I have myself as admin and 2 mods for 206 members on my forums, I have considered promoting 1 or 2 more as it does spur people on to get more involved with the community. But at the same time I don't want people to be put off by the number of 'staff' on the site!
