When do you look for moderators and how many is too many?

I was curious how large of a staff you guys think is appropriate when starting out a new forum. What are some of the criteria you look for when choosing a new Moderator?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

George

well, I prolly have to many moderators here, but I feel with 1,000 members, and say you have 300 active ? I think one admin and 2 or 3 mods can run a site pretty well.

I've seen much larger sites run with very few mods, and I've seen smaller sites sith 5-10 mods..lol

it just depends on what work there is for the mods

I once had a large forum (related to free hosting) and we were like 3 admins and 7 mods, but we weren't to much then, to keep all the crap out and to cool off some hot heads but once gain depends on the forum. I also had a forum I ran alone, but since it was so niche... hardly any hot heads there. Just had some hacks to prevent spam that helped a lot like here.

I think it varies from forum to forum, too.

I have 4 Mods, but I could actually use another one to fill the late evening (US times) time slot.

I have been on other forums where they have 10 Mods and I log on and not one is to be seen...

Thanks for the input guys. I think once a forum gets big enough where there's plenty of active members around the clock, a good rule of thumb would be to try to have one mod on at all times.

I'm fortunate enough to have a moderator who is seemingly an insomniac. They are almost permanently online and you can't get a thing past her!

Does anyone reward / pay their moderators? I was planning on doing something for them for putting in the additional time into my website. Luckily I am a supplier of products for what my forum is about so I will probably "pay" them in products they would want or a gift card.

I was just wondering what others peoples thoughts were on offering something back to your moderators.
