Do you use your real identity?

Do you use your real name and details (profession, location, family status etc.) when writing for your blog? Or do you try to obscure it?

Re: Do you use your real identity?

I use my real first name and location. I've discussed my family a few times b/c it does come up. I use my real profession. I haven't had any fears of people knowing too much, you do control the situation of what to post and not to post each person will have their own tolerance.

I feel having my members get to know me a bit helps them relate to me better and want to come back. At least I hope.

Re: Do you use your real identity?

I do use "handles", I have a couple of different online nicknames for different sites and different circumstances. I do use my real name on my blog, facebook, and myspace, but I don't use my facebook and myspace sites very often. I'm sure if people google me, follow my blog posting, etc. closely, they'll connect some of the handles to the "real" identifying details. I don't engage in outright lies about my name, profession, etc., but I am not forthcoming with them, either.

In most cases (99.9%) I use my name to write whether it's a Blog that I authored, a reply or something posted on one of the many Forums that I visit.

*Oddly enough this is probably the only place in the last 12-14 years of Internet activity where I'm not using my name

Heck, my number is posted on quite a few of the Forums that visit and doing a Google search of my name brings up a ton of information. It's the internet, you can find information on anybody ...

I would never even think about posting it though. What made you do so unless it was a private page?

The only people on the net that have my number is vBSEO Staff and Brandon here.

Could have been for any number of reasons. Might have been about tickets to a Flyers game, a Forum get together or as a better way to give someone advice on a subject with having to go through all of the back and forth typing. It's just a phone number, no worries, and like I was saying before most of it can be found anyway ...

Re: Do you use your real identity?

Well identity is more than just using your real name... even those who use their real names might leave out plenty of identifying information like city or profession, if they have a common name.

I do on three of my primary blogs because otherwise when I post a similar article on ezine it won't get approved on ezine so now they can easily verify my credentials but the rest I'm simply "Admin"

My clients do get my cell # for business purposes.

Re: Do you use your real identity?

Just set up a blog it's about dress up games and it's just 3 moths old.. wonder if, is there any constraints when trying to use some details about yourself..? I've been worried for I've heard of this identity theft..that's why what I've been doing is limiting the details I gave...like using just my first name and maiden name..and not putting any exact address..

Re: Do you use your real identity?

What are you hiding from, for the people who don't use there real name unless your attacking politicions or groups as a hobby there is no need to hide.

I use my real name address its all available at any whois site as Taragon said, but I will never post on page in a blog, forum etc my address or phone number or any private details.

A name is a name, my real name is number one in google.com.au brettreilly as it is my blog address.

Just because you're not using your real name doesn't mean you're hiding anything at all (tho for some I'm sure they are). It means that you are trying to maintain a level of privacy, even on the internet where not much is private at all.
