| premium wpmudev well as i was surfing looking for stuff for my blogs i stumbled across wpmudev premium. its a site with premium mods and templates, but you have to pay to join, a whopping $50 a month!!
the mod i really wanted was there, see HERE
Farms is like some super duper WPMU dev dude right. And that pack in that link is free to d/l AWESOME!
but if you read down, they released a mod that goes with the templates (optional) that lets you easily show ads on the templates auto like (think vbadmanagement for wpmu)
so my curiosity was piqued, it is against my religion to pay to access a site but against my better judgment i paid.
For 50 bux you have access too
20 plugins
2 theme packs (both superceded by the pack up there that is free ^^)
1 multiDB hack used for if you ahve to run 1000 or blogs and db size is a issue.
you get that and "support" on their forums. Now i understand, this is a dev site, i premium site, and there is a large WPMU forum to ask questions on. I never understood the difference in "plugins" and "mu-plugins" folders and went to install a premium plugin and had a question. i posted it on their forums for support just like the release thread directed me too....
heres how it went Quote:
Hey all, new here I run talkdelaware.com a vB forum and talkdelaware.com/blogs is a MU install
i get instructions on plugins here that say add so and so file to the "/wp-content/mu-plugins" directory and I do it as instructed and they dont show in the menu in WP admin panel. If i add them to "/wp-content/plugins" though, they do
it has to be something dumb im doing, any help?
TIA,
Caddy

Best bet would be to ask this over at WordPress MU WordPress MU Forums or MU Advanced: Issues and Discussion These forums are not for general support. Please review the Support Notice sticky for more details.
When you do post over at one of those sites, best bet would be to give specifics. (ie the specific plugin you;re trying to use.) Folks can offer little help unless they know what specifically you're trying to do.
| Are you F'ing kidding me? i just payed 50 bux to sign up here and get support and your first response is directing me to ask elsewhere? kiss.my.ass
DO NOT sign up there, it is NOT worth it. I nearly unloaded on them after that, but i kept cool, i got all the mods d/l'd i wont be back.
friendly FYI
ETA: i did ask on the advance site or w/e here is how that went, "that's basic MU righT there" noooo really? ..!.. http://mu.thunderlounge.com/index.ph...;topicseen#new

| Re: premium wpmudev Boy, you'd think that with a true 'support' staff, that site might be worth a little something. Even if you had a support staff on call, it might not be worth the $50/month price.
But, to be treated like that at $50/month? Sheesh.
Chase, maybe we should open a WordPress MU forum? With real members that support each other. And only charge like $10/month |

| Re: premium wpmudev LOL...I know what you mean.
Boy, when I started on the vBulletin software (with absolutely NO prior experience in dealing with it and very limited HTML experience) I was in WTF-land. Now, I'm light years ahead of what I knew.
I'm only partly HUH? with a chance of WTF |

| Re: premium wpmudev I guess they don't want to 'lower' themselves by answering such a lowly question. Jack@sses! I can't stand that sort of thing.
Just help the person out AND show them where the resource is so that they check things out in the future. |

| Re: premium wpmudev Heya,
I understand your complaint and appreciate where you;re coming from - I think the issue is basically one of miscommunication so if you'll let me try to explain a little better.
The site is pretty much set up to offer all of the extra plugins and themes and then support them - rather than to offer basic WPMU support, perhaps we don't make that clear enough and in that case sorry
I actually think though that we should offer more basic instruction and support (along with videos etc.) to new users to WPMU like yourself, and it'd be great to hear your feedback on that... what would you find most useful etc.?
Also, the forums there are open to all members, so I'm not sure who you talked to but I doubt it was myself or Andrew - it's the same with all forums, people can be tired / or a bit confused and end up pissing people off.
And just quickly, in answer to your original question, plugins that you drop into mu-plugins actually don't appear in your regular plugins menu because they are automatically activated across the site - hope that helps.
Sorry again for any bother and looking forward to any idead / feedback.
Cheers, James |

| Re: premium wpmudev I REALLY appreciate the post James, seriously I do. It shows a lot of character and speaks volumes. I didn't know the forums are open to all, or free to post on. I thought the whole site was basically payed members or staff and that kind of explains the canned answer i got. I'm sure you could understand that after i payed 50 duckets and had a little (simple) issue and got a kind of off putting answer i was rather....frustrated.
Us vB guys are used to having literally 100's of mods and templates and outstanding support all at our fingertips at vbulletin.org for free, so the wpmu side is a little different.
I think your vision of offering more basic instructions, video, and tutorials to people using MU is a great idea, MU is a different animal then we or most new web users are used to. It is open source, free, (which is great) but with it being like that the user has to deal with more bugs, fixes, errors, etc and most of us can't code and troubleshoot like that. I know i can't..lol I have had Delaware Blogs up and running for a good while now but i haven't really done a lot with them, I am going to start more actively developing them in the near future and will definetly need some help.
Not that I'm a vB fanboy or anything but I would love to see the advanced site you guys got on vB, it's a better platform and more flexible then smf IMO.
Lastly, no you weren't there when i posted, the other guys were and they seemed to be either redirecting me and or talking down to me. That is not a way to run a site or talk to people who could be future contributors in a community. I used to run or help run some big nextel/cell phone forums and you wouldn't believe the questions we got there and i always strived to help everyone the best i could to help grow the community. It ain't easy, sometimes it's annoying, and frustrating, but sometimes you have to suck it up and put your nice face on and help the noobs. Especially when they paid good money to be there. I can't remember a time in recent past i was as angry as i was when i asked those simple questions and got those off putting answers.

| Re: premium wpmudev Thanks for the reply and sorry again for the bother - we're actually upgrading the site right now (as we speak) and we'll make it a priority to get some sort of support going for your kind of issues as well as video tutorials etc.
As well as a new theme pack with some extra funky features too!
This kind of thing is really great as it allows us to improve what we offer - although I'm sorry that it was at a cost of your frustration, can I give you an extra couple of months for free so you can stick around to see the improvements? |

I'm sure that everything can be resolved and we can see if the service that your site provides is 'worth it' for other potential customers such as myself. |

| Re: premium wpmudev That is really nice, and I gracciously accept James, we do forums, MU does blogs, lets work together
Arny touches on a very good point here. I'll tell you what i honestly think here James, check this out. Complete Wordpress/Vbulletin Bridge - Share Users And Postings - vBulletin.org Forum
the first "requirement" Quote: |
# DOES NOT and WILL NEVER support Wordpress MU.
| WHACK!
Seriously, i think if a working bridge from vB to MU could be developed that is would be big for both communities.
vB markets there built in blogs, as discussed even here before, they suck. WP is much better and MU is right up our multi-user vB alley so to speak
I myself, would pay money (im sure other would too) for a working vB/MU bridge so my forum users could share a login with the MU side of my site and i could have some control in my vbulletin admin control panel over it, dead serious. We have quite a few paid hacks for vB and many of us use them, this wouldn't be different.
I'm open for suggestion, help, whatever.

| Re: premium wpmudev I agree with Caddy, I've been watching Arny's Disney site empire building with just a twinge of envy, wondering if I could leverage (gawd I hate that term, and here I am using it) my vB-Based community into a blog site too! |

| Re: premium wpmudev Sure thing guys, a bridge would certainly be cool - we currently use bbpress, which has its advantages, but is hardly what you'd call feature rich!
Chase, you should have until 1st November 08 now on your account... if it stuffs up (we've just done an upgrade) then just let me know (james /at/ incsub (dot) com).
I'll ask the team (I'm no great dev, just an enthusiastic amateur who can hack a few themes about vbulletin / mu crossovers and see if they've got any ideas. |

| Re: premium wpmudev I don't know Arny I think it's pricey at best though it looks to be a decent place for support. But is the monthly fee really a necessity when you can view the forums anyway? In addition to the wpmu.org support forums (free)? I suppose if you're really after the themes and mods it'd be worth it but I have found if I look hard enough for answers to questions I can find them free. Also I know a great WP guru over at DP I use who generally can answer most questions or do specific coding at dirt cheap rates. Much cheaper then the $79 a month, if you think you can get that income back then go for it.. what specific value of support/services/mods/themes do YOU hope for and can they make it worth that coin to you I guess is the questions, hopefully others with experience who took the plunge will have a better answer for you. |

I'm looking for help and there just doesn't seem to be the support like there is for vB there. I'll give DigitalPoint a look a little later too and see if I can get in touch with PhoenixBird on there. Thanks! |
