Re: vBulletin 3.6.8 Released
Yeah, lots of templates change. [Pretty much] a full template reversal is required for the upgrade. There is no patch.

Re: vBulletin 3.6.8 Released Active or Sloppy? You can bet that the guys over at vBulletin are touting the "Active" angle but you can also be pretty sure that either the management there or the development staff are having big problems with an "out of control" release cycle, especially if the releases start to generate their own bug fix cycles which is a high probability given the way they are shotgunning these releases. This is the fourth time, 'they' got me in the middle of an upgrade and I have skipped three releases not because they came too fast and I have heavily modified my site so its not a trivial update for me and actually take a couple of days of dedicated time to complete... starts to seriously suck now... I expect we will see another serious burst of bug releases too if and when they ever get that blog software released... I bought this stuff because it was suppose to be the best but frankly, I ran phpbb for a long time without this continuous upgrade cycle and I am wondering what "the best" actually means now ... regards, mikesz Last edited by mikesz; 07-27-2007 at 02:47 AM. Re: vBulletin 3.6.8 Released phpbb is known to be an open door for hackers once you start to use addons. As server admin I just ban phpbb since I'm fed up with that software. Vbulletin 'was' more strict on code and addons are screened at vb.org True since a few months now it seems to be a little hectic. Pre period to the selling and now this rush to have the new options like the blog. Vb is rushed in a race I'm not sure they will win. There are a fezw addons now that are really the missing part to make it a complete portal. Seems they got nose of it and want to counter .... not sure it is the way to go, future will tell. In the meantime they have to change core structure of vb ... and that will again open loopholes and bugs.. plus upgrades.....

Re: vBulletin 3.6.8 Released Eric,Actually, I couldn't agree more about phpbb, that was the reason I went with vb but this is really ridiculous now... My license hasn't run out yet by several months still and I have seen at least five releases come and go... At least twice, I got half to three quarters done on an upgrade and they fired up an new one on me... not a pretty picture especially where I only do a single customization and don't allow user switching on themes because of the customization I did on the one I use. Should be interesting, I think the way to go is to find one release that does the job and just stick with it for me. Of course, you know that will get me a mandatory security update for sure have a great day, mikesz Quote |

Re: vBulletin 3.6.8 Released I don't think you can blame Vb that it takes you days to update your s/w.. It's not their fault you choose to mod it beyond the default install versus just installing a new template and letting it go.. I'm just as guilty as you or anyone else for that matter, I too have mods installed but refuse to update my site unless I see a significant reason like security (which this is not one) to update it.. I try to stay away from hacks with extensive template edits as well.. More and more developers are going the way of plug-ins and that alone makes it easier to update the sites.. ![]() Quote |

Actually, I don't believe that is at all what I was saying at all. I was complaining about the frequency with which VB has released product that they didn't "get right" to begin with not that it takes me so long to upgrade my site. VB claims that they are "maintence releases" (except for the xss issue) and in fact they appear to be more like "oops" releases or somebody's pet issue got fixed and needed an officially supported release to deploy it. If they had a real release process, this shotgun approach would not exist. Sorry for your confusion. regards, mikesz Last edited by mikesz; 07-27-2007 at 06:33 AM. Quote |

Re: vBulletin 3.6.8 Released Since I am new to this (I just bought vBulletin last week)... How often do they release updates, generally? I am just curious... I guess I get to install it with no hassle... ![]() My best guess is the average is around every 2 months. (Guesstimated by their version #'s) Anyway, my take is admins who are experiencing backlash (user feedbacks) will be happy with this update. Looks like it was just a few lil' bugs on vB's side which caused them some grief. Last edited by woodcreeker; 07-27-2007 at 06:47 AM. Quote |

Re: vBulletin 3.6.8 Released It varies, but your guess is fairly good. For example, 3.6.7 came out in May (I think); then there was some patch ("PL1") soon thereafter which could be applied without a full upgrade. Point upgrades like 3.6.8 now seem to be released every 2-3 months, with sometimes an almost immediate follow-up upgrade to fix some issue the original upgrade caused ;). Quote |
