Virtual sub-forum viewer - is there such a thing.

I operate a large forum. There is a group of our users who want their own sub-forum. there are various arguments against giving it to them but I was wondering whether it might be possible to allow them all to join a special usergroup and allow certain threads to be flagged so that they could be viewed as a sort of virtual subforum although all of the threads would be stored in an ordinary forum and fully available to all users and completely mixed in with all of the other threads in that forum. I know that subscribing to threads can accomplish roughly the same thing but I am interested in the extra flexibility of someone being able to call up on demand, a view of certain flagged threads and to be able to treat that as a separate forum - although a virtual one at that.

Any ideas?

Thanks

There used to be a mod like this, but it was pulled after vB decided it violated the TOS, although you could use the Social Groups function?

Thanks for your reply. I wonder how it could violate the TOS?

Can you explain a bit about using the social groups function?

Thanks

Dude... you COULD make a private forum just for them... based on usergroup permissions. OR password protected forum.

Of course I could. That's very evident but that isn't solution I want. I want their threads to be generally available but viewable in one place, all together if they want so that they can enjoy their sense of identity but without obliging others to go to a different forum and also so that their threads can seen in the context of all of the other threads dealing with the same subject matter.
In other words, a virtual forum. Rather like a subscription list but available automatically if you are a member of a particular secondary usergroup, without having to subscribe to each thread separately.

Yeah, i now get you.
I guess that would be both complicated and a bit confusing for the other members.

What I am suggesting would be neither complicated nor confusing. It fits in very well with what VB can do at the moment and to other members it would be transparent. If they were not members of the secondary user group then they would never see the virtual forum. We are only really taking about an adjustment of the subscription function or of the search function.

The social groups is part of vbulletin 3.7
You can view it on our forum here
vBulletin Setup - Social Groups
Feel free to play and test the groups
You should be able to make your own group and comment on other groups.
These all have usergroup permissions, but I pretty much have it opened up to everyone so you all can test out the functions and everything.
Also with vb 3.7, the profiles have changed.. I'll add your to my "friends" list so you can see how that all works.

anyways.. hope this helps
