Nintendo says Wii on track to meet targets

Nintendo Co. Ltd. is on track to meet its target of selling 4 million units of its Wii game console globally by the end of the year, with the potential for exceeding that goal limited only by manufacturing constraints, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said on Wednesday.

"All systems are go for reaching the 4-million target we have in our financials by December 31," he said at the Reuters Media Summit in New York. "We will sell everything we make so now it's simply a manufacturing thing."

Nintendo <7974.OS> on Tuesday said it had sold 600,000 Wii consoles in the first eight days after its November 19 release in the Americas -- and that Wii-related revenue, including games and accessories, had hit $190 million.

"Exceeding (sales targets) is going to be challenging based on manufacturing capacity," he added. "We will sell everything we make so now it's simply a manufacturing thing."

Nintendo, the underdog console maker in the three-way console war, opted out of the technology arms race between Microsoft Corp. <MSFT.O> and market leader Sony Corp. <6758.T> <SNE.N> -- which are selling super-powered machines with high-definition graphics -- choosing to make its mark with an innovative one-handed controller rather than revved up power and high-definition graphics.

Sony debut its PlayStation 3 in the United States on November 17 and has declined to say how many units it has sold thus far. It has targeted 1 million units in North America and 2 million total worldwide, by year's end.

Fils-Aime added that sales of Nintendo's DS and Game Boy Advance handheld devices were also strong and on pace to meet the company's sales targets.

Nintendo has steadly gone downhill.. they need to go back to what made them the King of Video Games back in the late 80's early 90's

Re: Nintendo says Wii on track to meet targets

IMO the SNES and N64 are the best consoles to date...

Both had awesome games and fun game-play. When my cousins would come over, I remember playing Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Super Smash Brothers and other games like that for YEARS. Every time they would come over we would play, and it was an awesome time.

That multiplayer factor was huge. Sure there were better graphics in the Playstation (which I also had), but it wasn't nearly as fun. I always feel graphics are better on the computer anyway. Online play is fun, but not nearly as fun as playing with someone beside you.

Anyway, I think Nintendo made the right move. The graphics war will go on forever, but it's much harder to be innovative and make fun games that people will play for years. I bought a Wii a while ago, and my family LOVES it. We also have an XBox, that only my brother plays. I'm sure the same would go for the Xbox 360 and PS3. They aren't fun.

I have to agree with you there. Goldeneye.. aww man that game was fun. I didn't even like first person shooters that until I played that game.

Because back then they were revolutionary. When it came down to Cube vs Xbox vs PS2, the cube offered nothing new. This time around Nintendo has opted to revolutionize game play as it did with the N64 and Nintendo.

As for Goldeneye, my friends and I loved that back then but in terms of multi player Halo 2 is the same thing but better graphics, bigger levels, and more in depth. I am not stuck on simply those matters as I still love to play rom versions of old games on my xbox. Mainly shining force 2 for Sega.
