This was converted from SMF where it was running for about a year and a half and never took off - after converting I suddenly have active members! but I am trying harder now too. Maybe it's something about paying the almost $400 for vBulleting, vBulletin blog, vBSEO, etc :-)

Have any recommendation? One thing I've been worried about in the past with customizing is regarding upgrades. Will I have to go through lots of hoops to upgrade from now on after applying a custom skin.

In my opinion, it's well worth the 10 extra minutes that you'll have to spend upgrading, to have an outstanding style.

Most hacks use the plugin/product system and don't need any special attention upgrading.

vB Skins - High Quality vBulletin Skins & Styles has some really good skins (most are free)

it's a good skin and will be surely updated as time goes on.
